I moved to Asheville in 2005 and bought a dilapidated home in the Southside neighborhood, built in 1902. Over the years, I’ve fully renovated it, and along the way, I’ve fallen in love, gotten married, had two kids, and expanded our home. Before the pandemic, I worked in Asheville’s restaurant and hospitality scene, primarily at the Grove Park Inn and Renaissance. Since then, I’ve relied on my natural handiness and arsenal of tools to tackle various home projects for our family and others. Check out the Project Gallery to see some of my work.

I find joy and purpose in helping my fellow Ashevillians enjoy their homes and so… Fixed by Mitch | BlackPowder Fix It, LLC was born.

Our boys have just started 4th grade at Hall Fletcher Elementary and 6th grade at Asheville Middle School. My wife, Molly, manages the business side of things so I can concentrate on the fixing.

Why BlackPowder Fix It, LLC? My last name is Powdermaker and my wife’s is Black and while Black-Powdermaker is fun on its own, BlackPowder is even better.

Q&A

Are there things you don’t fix?

While my 1902 home has given me lots of opportunities to improve my handyman skills, I am unable to run new plumbing or electrical. Changing out and repairing fixtures and sockets, yes! Once we get past that, a licensed plumber or electrician is needed. I will let you know where my handyman role should end and a plumber or electrician’s should begin for your specific project.

What is your rate?

Every home and project is unique. We ask about your ideal budget and timeframe in the Free Online Estimate Form. The more details you can provide like current state pictures, the more accurate estimate I can provide.

What payment methods to you accept?

We currently accept Checks, Zelle, and Venmo payments.

Will you provide handyman services outside of Asheville?

For the right job, absolutely. Let us know you are outside of Asheville on the Online Estimate form.
